The Evolution of Katy Perry's Star Image

I have analysed  Katy Perry in four different magazines. It will help me to construct my own  magazine as it will give me an idea of how my artist will pose and what costumes they could wear to attract the audience for my own magazine.

Setting/Location:
In a studio on a set. The background is pink.
As the set background is pink it portrays her confident feminine side towards the audience.
Costume/Props:
Katy Perry is wearing a light pink bodycon dress with a glittery material.
The costume that she wearing adds to her feminine representation  but also her fashion icon star image as she also has her hair in a purple colour that makes seem like a fashionista and is interested in that more than in her music industry at that moment.
Camera Shot:
It’s a medium shot as you can see her body from the hips up.

As the camera shot is from her hip as you can see that she is showing off her clothes that she is wearing and suggesting that, that is the new trend; to wear bodycon dresses.
Lighting:
The lighting is in high key and it makes her stand out.
The lighting is high key and mainly focuses on Katy Perry and the light shines off her skin as that is the only colour in the shot that is lighter than the pink. The lighting also shines off her hair as it is long and purple which catches your attention as that is the part of her body that is not pink.
Facial expression/Body language
Katy Perry is composed and she is holding her hip with one hand and the other hand is on her face near her chin.
They way Katy Perry is modelling suggest that she wants people to see what she is wearing as she is facing the camera and has direct mode of address. She is also showing off her hips that outlines it from her dress.
Anchorage Text:
“KATY PERRY ON BREAKING UP AND MOVING ON”

From the anchorage text you can see that she is clearly recovering from a break up and that she is focused on her fashion industry at the moment to keep her mind off her recent break up. It also shows that she is over the person and wants to focus on other things. It says ‘moving on’ which shows her as a strong independent woman.

Setting/Location:
She is in a studio and the set is white.
The plain white background brings out more attention to Katy Perry as the central image.

Camera Shot
Long medium shot that shows exactly what she is wearing.
The long medium shows her body from the thighs up and shows all her costume and her body position which shows that she is expressing her personality towards the audience.

Questionnaire Results

I have used a questionnaire to target my audience as I would like to know what my audience will like in my own product.

The questionnaire given out to other students has given me ideas how to construct my own music magazine.I have asked them what genre they listen to. RnB had the highest responses which made me realize that if there are too many mainstream music magazine about RnB there won’t be many music magazines about the other genres.  I have decided to choose Indie as my genre as it will help me create a niche music magazine and help raise the response to the Indie genre.

When I asked this particular question I received answers that were a variety which helps me add to my music magazine as I can get a variety of artist and the audience could get to know them. Most people that answered this question suggested they would like ‘Arctic Monkeys’ on the front cover and they are part of the indie genre which shows that a couple of people know about the genre.

This question shows that many people want to see interviews on a music magazine which means I could include this in my own music magazine and would make the readership increase because I have included what people want which would make people purchase it.

In this question I received an equal amount of responses which were ‘lyrics’ and ‘appearance’. This helps me decide whether to have the main artist/band on the front cover with a part of their lyrics that can catch the attention of the audience and get them to purchase the magazine.

Here, not many people buy albums or singles which tells me I could include albums as their price in a normal shop is high. I can include a free album as a freebie which would make the readership increase.

This question helps me decide what I should put on the front cover to make it more interesting and more eye catching. I can also add a variety of the above. (Article competitions and freebies)

When the people who answered this question most of the responses was monthly as most of them the students and they won’t always buy magazine that are weekly because they don’t have a high income.

This helps me decide what price would be convenient for my magazine.
However this will affect my magazine as it will be published and would have to be a reasonable price.

This can also help me because I can add on a magazine a link to the online print which can tell the audience what is coming up for the next magazine as it is monthly.

Most people who answered this question preferred my title block to be called unplugged.
Broken Records seems more interesting and can draw more attention to the audience.
